ABOUT US

Save Subak is a socio-ecological movement that combines the preservation of Bali’s agricultural heritage with the provision of high-quality organic rice. We work with over 150 farmers in Subak Sangeh, Badung Regency, Bali, through a fair and transparent partnership system.

The Problems We Face

The Subak system in Bali is under pressure from land conversion, chemical use, and the economic burden on farmers. As a result, rice fields are shrinking, the environment is being polluted, and many farmers are leaving their land. If this continues, Bali will lose both its food sources and the cultural identity rooted in Subak. The current challenges include:

Land Conversion

The pressure for high yields has led many farmers to use chemical fertilizers and pesticides. As a result, the soil is degraded, water is polluted, and local ecosystems are disrupted — all of which contradict the sustainable principles of Subak.

Dependence on Chemicals

Pesticides and chemical fertilizers damage the soil and water, disrupt ecosystem balance, and pose health risks to both farmers and consumers.

Economic Pressure on Farmers

Small-scale farmers often receive unfair prices for their rice while production costs keep rising. Many are forced to leave farming or sell their land.

Loss of Cultural Identity

If farmers continue to abandon their fields, Bali will not only lose a source of local food but also a vital part of its cultural identity rooted in Subak.

To address these various challenges, a collective and sustainable effort is needed — one that supports environmental preservation and farmer welfare.

Save Subak

is a movement to preserve Bali's traditional irrigation system, focusing on the adoption of organic farming practices, support for local farmers, and reducing environmental impact through sustainable organic rice consumption. This movement was initiated by PT. Solusi Organik and Organik Solutions through the campaign '1KG Organic Rice Saves the Earth.'

Through the Save Subak movement, every purchase of organic rice you make has a tangible and measurable impact. It's not just a regular transaction — every 1 kg of organic rice you buy directly contributes to:

Saving approximately 2,500 liters of water

(Organic farming uses water more efficiently compared to conventional systems)

Protecting approximately 0.02 m² of farmland from land conversion

(Assuming 5 tons/ha → 1 kg = 0.0002 ha of land)

Reducing carbon emissions by approximately 1.7 kg CO₂e

(Without chemical fertilizers and synthetic pesticides, emissions are lower)

Supporting farmers

(One farmer typically manages 0.25 ha = 1,250 kg/harvest → so every 25 kg directly helps 1 farmer)
